The new school zone traffic law is in effect TODAY. The speed limit is 10 mph within 200 feet of school property. For the elementary/middle school campus, this zone is from Date Street to Hickory Street and Second Avenue to Seventh Avenue. School zones are in effect 7:00am-4:00pm on school days. Please slow down, stay alert, and help us keep our students safe!

Just ONE more day, MES! School starts tomorrow, and we are so excited to see you! Open House is this afternoon 4:00-5:30. Parents, if you'd like to see your child's classroom and visit with their teacher, this is the time. Tomorrow morning, parents will not go to classrooms with students. This is to help everyone transition into our school day as easily as possible.

Students eating breakfast at school should arrive at 7:30. If students eat breakfast at home, they should arrive by 7:45. Classes begin at 7:45, and students are late after 7:50.

We're looking forward to a great first week! See you so soon, MES!

Just TWO more days, MES! Sunday nights aren't so bad now that we're on a four-day week, are they? Like the last few years, students do not have school on most Mondays this year. There are a few exceptions, though. Watch that district calendar closely and plan your trips around longer breaks from school. Attendance is so critical to success!

THREE MORE DAYS! With the start of school so close, it's time - we must talk about the Kiss-n-Go.

We know you're stressed out by the Kiss-n-Go line. We understand the line gets long and it can take a few minutes of waiting to get in and out of the Kiss-n-Go. Remember, our ultimate goal is that all 550+ elementary and middle school students get dropped off and picked up SAFELY. And our systems allow that to happen if we all follow the procedures. It typically takes about ten to twelve minutes after dismissal for ALL students to safely get where they need to be. That's not bad at all!

Here's what we need from you to make it happen...
~Use the drop-off/pick-up lanes in front of the elementary or the middle school OR park your car across the street from the school. Your child can use the crosswalk to safely walk to and from your vehicle. 🚗🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️
~Pull all the way forward in the pick-up lines. Do not stop near the back because it's closer to a door. When a car in front of you moves, keep moving forward so cars behind you can get into the lane. 🚗🚗🚗
~Please DO NOT look for alternate areas to park. The staff parking lot and the north loop are NOT SAFE drop-off and pick-up areas. These areas are not to be used for drop-off and pick-up.🚧
~Watch carefully at the crosswalk. The crossing guard will hold the stop sign high and stand in the middle for students to cross. When the sign is up, you MUST STOP. 🛑🖐
~ONLY CROSS AT THE CROSSWALK. If you're parking across the street and walking over to pick up your child, you must use the crosswalk. Crossing outside the crosswalk is unsafe, it slows the process for everyone else, and it sets a terrible example for our students. 🤦‍♀️
~Traffic on Elm Street must keep moving (at 10 mph) unless stopped by the crossing guard at the crosswalk. Do not block intersections or stop in the middle of the street waiting for room in a pick-up line. If the line is full, circle the block and come back, and you'll find room.🚗
~Expect that it may take a few minutes. Again, your child(ren)'s safety is our priority. Please, eyes up, phones down, and stay calm. 😊

We are grateful for your cooperation and for your patience! Let's keep everyone safe coming to and leaving school each day!
See you soon, MES!

FOUR days until school starts, MES! Parents, have you seen the updates from Yuma Police Department about changes to school zones? The perimeter around each campus has been extended and the new school zone speed limit is 10 miles per hour. Please check out YPD's posts and follow the new traffic laws to keep our students safe as they come and go from our schools.

Just FIVE days until school starts! Today we'd like to highlight the school meals program menu. It's posted now and available through the district website. Like last year, students will have main dish options to choose from each day for both breakfast and lunch. For lunch there are two hot options and a cold salad option as well. Additionally, the salad bar offers a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. Students choose and order their lunch option when morning attendance is taken. Please take a look at the menu with your child(ren) and start planning choices!

Seven more days until school starts, MES! It's time to start planning your school year calendar. With only 150 instructional days in our school year, consistent daily attendance is so important. Even a few unnecessary absences during a semester can have a significant impact on students' academic growth and development. Please take a look at the student days calendar and schedule appointments and out of town trips on days school is not in session. We need you here every day!

Student Days Calendar

With 8 more days until the first day of school, it's time to start rebuilding those evening and bedtime routines. Experts suggest setting a consistent wake-up time now and gradually shifting bedtime earlier each night until you're back into your school-year routine. Remember, elementary students need 8+ hours of sleep nightly to be successful.

Doors will open for breakfast at 7:30am. Please do not drop students off prior to 7:30 as there is no supervision until that time. Students will go to classes at 7:45, and those arriving after 7:50 will be tardy.

Our ten day countdown begins today! Can you believe it?

Today, we'll highlight YSD-1's new website and app. Be sure to check out www.yumaschools.org and click on Morris Elementary School in the 'schools' dropdown menu. You'll find all the information you need to get this school year started - registration info, school supply lists, open house date and times - it's all there!

And YSD-1 also has an app you can download to keep updated on events and activities at the school. Soon, we'll activate a tool within the app so parents can communicate with teachers and classrooms. Search "Yuma School District" in your preferred app store to install the app on your device.
